The Story:

Founded in 1966, WYSO provides transformational musical experiences and opportunities to over 450 students, ages five to eighteen, with its three full orchestras, two string orchestras, multiple ensembles, and the Music Makers program, which provides lessons and instruments to underserved youth.

Historically affiliated with the UW School of Music, WYSO elected to become fully independent from UW in 2019. In 2021, WYSO hired Urban Assets to guide them in the planning a development of a new purpose-built facility, from site selection through construction.

In addition to serving WYSO’s programs, the facility will be available for other community arts and educational organizations for rehearsals, classes, lessons, and occasional performances.

Located in the growing East Washington Corridor, WYSO’s iconic new home will complement other cultural arts venues including MyArts, Breese Stevens, Art & Lit Lab, and the Sylvee.

In The News

“This building is going to be a state-of-the-art, acoustically superior rehearsal space for all ages, and a real jewel in the cultural crown of Madison.”

Bridget Fraser, Executive Director, WSYO
